Our heritage is linked to one of the most vibrant and culturally rich nations in Africa the nation of Nigeria.
Nigeria is a land of immense diversity and history. Long before colonial borders were drawn, the region was home to powerful kingdoms and civilizations. Over time, Nigeria became a mosaic of kingdoms and peoples—the Hausa kingdoms in the north, the Benin Kingdom of the Edo people in the south, the Igbo Kingdom of Nri in the southeast, and the
Yoruba empires, including Ife and Oyo, in the southwest. Our heritage, through the Battle family line, comes from the people of great tribes that played vital roles in the shaping of African history. Each tribe had their own systems, beliefs, and ways of life, the Nigerian people produced some of the oldest bronze artifacts in West Africa, using the advanced lost-wax casting technique—demonstrating a high level of sophistication and artistry.
In Yoruba society, wealth and power were often measured by land, influence, and, at one time, even the ownership of slaves—a reflection of global patterns of power and inequality that were also present in Africa. This was further complicated by the arrival of European traders and the devastating expansion of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Let us be clear: the trans-Atlantic slave trade was not the only form of slavery experienced by our people. Whether through war, debt, or kidnapping, many of our ancestors became victims of systems that sought to profit from their labor, their bodies, and their humanity. These are hard truths, but they are part of our history.
Still, it is important to remember: our ancestors were not just victims, they were survivors. Survivors of war, colonization, slavery, and displacement. Their endurance is what allowed the Battle family name to take root.
Through their pain, strength blossomed. Through their endurance, a legacy was born. That legacy is us. We are descendants of kings, artisans, warriors, and healers. Our bloodline carries both the tragedy of captivity and the triumph of survival.
The Battle family stands here today—strong, proud, and unbreakable. Let us never forget where we come from, and may we always walk forward with that knowledge in our hearts.
